A special thanks to the great many of you who came to the Reprieve Benefit at Sin-e last week. It was a fantastic turnout and for a great cause. Friends of Reprieve (www.reprieve.org) raised money and awareness and bands rocked Sin-e from 8 till the wee hours. Special thanks to organizer Erin Davis (www.ellipses.net), Reprieve boardmember Sarah Kunstler, UN consultant Sarah Koch-Schulte. Also thanks to The Teenage Prayers , Hem, American Altitude , The White Elephant Club, and the Tiny Amps. If you missed these bands all together it's a shame, but most of them are around playing in the city. Check them out. Hem will be at Lincoln Center at some point soon, and for the Tiny Amps you may have to go to Boston or catch them on the road (worth the trip). And thanks again to all who came out to support and bob heads, and to Shane at Sin-e.

The Waylons had a great time playing Southpaw with The Stands and Jet By Day. Thanks to all who came out and made it a great night (including, but not limited to, the members of Jet who, by the way, got us mentioned on Stalker).

Karl's in England and the Waylons are cold. We've been getting some kind words spoken about our recording feats lately. Check out some of the reviews of the Waylons CD EP on our spanking new Press Page.

The CD release party was a real success: Thanks to fans and The Black Table, the event drew well over a hundred people; Black Table readings were excellent, especially Aileen Gallagher’s; sound-man Clay was attentive and good; people bustled and smiled. Thanks to the many of you who were there. If you happened to miss the party, or you want more Waylons, we’re playing Siberia on December 1 at nine o’clock, and Southpaw Dec. 15 at Ten, and The Knitting Factory on December 28th.

Thanks to everyone who came out (on a Tuesday night even) to see our show at Trash. We played a lot of Buck Hunter, were treated excellently by the folks who run the place, and even rocked out a bit as well.

Oct. 24, 2004

We are happy to announce the Waylons and Black Table Party will be held at LIT on Thursday, Nov. 11. More details soon. In the meantime come see The Waylons this Tuesday (Oct. 26) at Trash in Williamsburg. Trash takes the space of the old Luxx. We're playing with friends The Fin and others.

The Waylons are excited to be teaming up with the Black Table for a CD-release party and reading fest. We expect a big turn out at this combined event and hope to see a lot of you there. We are doing our best to campaign for some drink specials for all.

Good show at Siberia last night playing with Surgery Sunday (featuring waylons friend and beloved design-maestro Justin Bilicki) and Knife Fight. Thanks to everyone who came out.

Sept. 15, 2004

The CDs are here. Boxes and boxes of beautifully cellophaned product await the masses. Scans of the cover art (by Justin Bilicki) will be on the site soon. The Waylons also thank Andrew Landry for mixing and co-producing the CD. We are still in the process of looking for the best scenario for a CD release party. In the meantime we look forward to our show at Siberia on Oct. 1.

So the long awaited (well, by us for one) EP is finally at the factory getting all manufactured for a very limited worldwide release to be announced soon. While the waylons plan for a cd-release party at one of our fine NYC music venues, spend a moment with a few clips of the new songs now posted on the LISTEN page.

July 15, 2004 |||

Justin Bilicki, who is responsible for most of The Waylons flyers seen here on the site, has agreed to design The Waylons' cover art for the upcoming EP. The recording is almost mixed and mastered, and should be available middle or late July.

You can reach Justin at justinbilicki@yahoo.com. Reminder: much of the art on this site is Justin's; The art that is the site itself, however, comes from the mind of Erin Davis' Ellipses Design (www.ellipses.net)

The Waylons are scouting venues for a CD release party. Stay tuned for that.

The Waylons are looking forward to this Thursday's (July 1) gig at Southpaw (www.spsounds.com) with Morex Optimo (www.morexoptimo.com) and Colin Steel (www.colinsteel.com). Both bands on the bill are friends; it's going to be something of a party. Doors open at 7:30. Colin Steel begins at 8:30. The Waylons follow.

Southpaw is a great big comfortable venue on 5th ave. in Brooklyn, an easy trip from Manhattan on most trains (see www.spsounds.com for directions).

Last night's show at CB's 313 Gallery was a good time. Thanks to CB's management for hosting and watching our stuff. Thanks also for the enthusiasm of the crowd.

June 20, 2004 |||

The Waylons are delighted with new bassist Patrick Cadigan, a man with a fierce sense of time and taste. Patrick will make his second appearance as a Waylon at CB's, June 25.

May 22, 2004 |||

The Waylons played The C-Note last night to a thoroughly packed room. Contributing to the congestion, it must be said, was the coziness of the venue, but it felt good nonetheless to see everyone up so close. Debuting at the C-Note on bass guitar was Patrick "talky" Cadigan, a real force that we're pleased to have with us. Thanks much to Dayna of I.M.E. Productions (www.indiemusicexplosion.com) for booking us and working the door, and to C-Note for hosting.

Recording has begun! We're working with Andrew Landry on what should be a five or six song EP.

Block magazine's feature article and interview on The Waylons is out. The article, by Evan Tobias, is excerpted below:

As the Winter barrels through the alleys and streets, sometimes the only things to keep us warm and sane are the comforts of a good book, a strong drink, a warm blanket and putting on our favorite albums waiting the winter to just end. The Brooklyn based band, The Waylons, are exactly that comfort needed to make it down the home stretch.

…Their best songs offer up a tinge of nostalgia as in "Take Me Out" where guitarist and songwriter Karl Wachter belts out a believable and beautiful ballad; one that even Neil Young would certainly appreciate. Not to say all their songs drip of longing and melancholy, but that is certainly where their most powerful moments lie, especially when you see them live. Their other best moments showcase a melodic but loose sound .. such in the unreleased "Stunning" [coming soon]. It is a stark contrast to the pop single "Half Shirt" where Sean Leadem, who shares the songwriting and guitar duties, invokes Jeff Tweedy and presents a perfect pop song that would make the coldest winter day a little warmer and could sweeten up the saddest breakup. Its basic structure and melody, equipped with the always pleasurable start-stops, stays burned in your mind for days.

Sandy Levering keeps the songs and solos together and moving on drums and vocals especially in "Waste of Time" and Robert Ritzinger keeps the tempo strong and controlled on bass. The Waylons form a great unit whose song structures and harmonies remain surprising not to get entrenched and lost in the genre … where misses are more available than hits.

The print version of this article, as well as a lengthy interview, is available in Block magazine at newsstands, delis, and other local businesses in the Williamsburg and Greenpoint area of Brooklyn. The online version has not been loaded.

The Waylons have lost a limb. Steadfast bassist Rob and The Waylons have parted ways amicably. Expect delays in output.

The Waylons Played "Lemon Rock" at The Lemon, (http://www.lemonnyc.com) on Park Avenue South in Manhattan. Dayna Blitz's IME Productions put on the event. The room is the unlikeliest for a rock show: a large dining room and lounge area resembling a set for Sex in The City. Despite the trappings, though, the bar had drink specials all night and the band sounded great, due in part to the Waylons and in part to IME/Lemon's sound guy, whose name escapes us but who can be seen improving sounds every Monday at The Lemon.

The Waylons played Freddy's back room benefit for those affected by the proposed (approved?) relocation of homes due to the new building project that will bring The Nets stadium (and several large buildings) to the downtown area. The Waylons are not sufficiently informed to endorse or condemn this cause, but Freddy's has been good to the Waylons, and will be a piece of Brooklyn history should the proposed building project succeed.

The Waylons played Block magazine's holiday party at Laila Lounge [www.lailalounge.com] in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Look for feature in Block in late March. Laila is a fine, spacious lounge-type space with friendly bartenders and sometimes interesting art on the walls. The downstairs, where they are now showcasing live bands, is a little small and the sound left a lot to be desired - this may be because The Waylons were the first loud act to play there.

Block magazine is a Williamsburg and Greenpoint arts and culture bi-monthly. It's available in an attractive print version for free at newsstands and restaurants/coffee shops in the area.
